August 20 Anxiously Awaiting VP pick Along with the rest of AmericaI know some people do not like to speculate on VP picks, but I think it is part of the fun in politics. We need something to distract from all of the lying. :) So the RNC list of speakers is out. Two names I noticed not speaking are Huckabee and Portman. I am not sure of who else that I can remember being in the speculation for vice-president that is not on the list. Of course, what McCain needs is an economic guy that is approved by the right.
“An email from Ireland to the brethren in the States...a point to ponder despite your political affiliation: April 26 Who knew subways emerged from the earth?Last weekend was my first trip to New York City. It was fun, but fast paced, as I went with a group of students from campus. On the last day, they dropped us off at St. Patrick's Cathedral and said, "See you later." It had been a long day and my friend and I weren't much for walking anymore. Well, I had never been on a subway until the trip and neither had she. So we get the directions to go from 42nd Street to 103rd Street. Really, it isn't that complicated, but coming from a one-stoplight hometown, we were a bit paranoid about the big city. We get on subway #1 and it starts going south, not north. Looking at the map, we see that it is going toward the place where you get off to see the Statue of Liberty. Umm...okay. We began discussing this and were trying to figure out what subways do when they can't go any further. The New Yorkers had to think we were crazy!!!! We came to two conclusions: 1.) It turns around. 2.) It goes backwards.
Well, it did turn around. But not before everyone got off and then this lady from outside the subway car comes by and says, "If you want to get off, then you have to be in another car." The doors close and we were left wondering, "What exactly does that mean?" And at this point, it was just the two of us in the car. We see the subway turn around (to our relief) and then we decide we might as well just go on up to 125th street and walk back to 103rd while stopping at Grant's Tomb and other places around our hostel. We pass the 103rd station and then all of a sudden, the subway emerges from the earth and into the light? Another moment that the people on the subway had to think we were insane.
The first sentences out of my friend's and my mouth were, "What the heck?" and "Can subways do this?" Haha....my dad thought this was hilarious when I told him....I have such a sheltered life. But think about.... "Sub-" means below. So when the "sub"way go above does that make it a "supra" or "hyper" way? I just thought I would share my dumb, blonde New York City moments. It was fun. Although, I do hate Chinatown. Probably because it was little overwhelming and everyone wants you to buy a purse, but you can't understand them other than the word "Prada" or "Gucci." The commercialism was overwhelming as well downtown. So my favorite things were the Statue of Liberty and this really cool cathedral, St. John Divine, a couple blocks from where we stayed. It is the largest gothic church in the world and it is still under construction. Unfortunately, the main part was being renovated, so we couldn't look at it. You looked up and you couldn't see the ceiling. Amazing. Overall, New York City is pretty cool, but I didn't buy a I March 06 Alberto Gonzales @ OSUTonight one of my roommates and I went to hear Alberto Gonzales speak. I neither disagree nor agree with him as I have not paid extremely close attention to what he has to say. I wanted to listen to one of the people who have impacted our lives. The speech was not meant to be purely politics, but to show how he was able to rise to the top and embrace the opportunities he was given. He did not come to cause controversy, but from the start, the liberals could not just let him be.
As we entered the building, fliers were handed to us. They were quite something. They urged questions such as, "Are you capable of feeling any shame?" Sure, one has the right to ask that, but it is not a very constructive question in my opinion.
Before the speech even started, numerous stink bombs were left off. Why they were not stopped or hunted down, is beyond me. Only a third of the auditorium was filled. But they continued. Personally, I almost threw up and was definitely dizzy. What were these stink bombs supposed to do? They were too far away from Mr. Gonzales to affect him, but they affected the innocent people who came to listen. As he began to speak, their were numerous disruptions. For example, Gonzales said something to the affect of "It was my dream as a child growing up without a telephone or hot water to...." and they would finish his sentences with "become a killer." Protests are fine; we have that freedom. But some of us truly wanted to listen and critique what he said. With these disruptions and random screaming...not even screaming words...that is impossible. Vulgar language and "blah, blah, blah" does nothing. Toward what seemed to be the end, the liberals strategically exploded. Gonzales really didn't say much, but it appeared that the speech was ending (haha...they were wrong). It was pretty interesting as the cops had to pull them out. You know those dramatic scenes that frantically spin across the room to create effect, that was exactly what this was like. It was pretty intense. After the extreme protesters were removed, Gonzales continued with his speech. He began to read a transcript of a man on the 92nd floor of one of the World Trade Centers who called his wife. AND THE PROTESTS CONTINUED with chants of LIAR, LIAR. He is reading the very tragic and sad conversation as a husband and wife are saying their goodbyes. Show some respect. I think that ticked me off the most. There was a question and answer section. All the questions were written down on a notecard before the speech and then read by a moderator to not cause problems. It was interesting as he gave really good answers and to note that the level of protesting went down. Personally, I think it takes a lot of guts from Gonzales to give speeches, especially at universities such as Ohio State. He could easily just retreat back to his home or find some other work. I guess the difference between me and the protesters is that I believe that people are inherently good. I do not think these people enjoy war or death. They are not sick people. They are not terrorists. I will never stoop to their level and behave in their manner. Keep it outside, keep it constructive. All they do is divide us even more. I talked to one of the students who volunteered at the event. She remarked that she has never been ashamed of her school as she was tonight. As for me, I feel ashamed that this is what I expected to happen. February 20 McCain's Rally for Wisconsin Primary in Columbus!Last night, I had the opportunity to go to the McCain rally here in Columbus! It was so exciting! I will have to create a photo album so you can see the pictures. Some aren't so great because of the lighting and the enormous flashing of cameras, but that is okay...I took plenty and a couple of videos. I was pretty close to the podium, but just shy of being able to shake his hand, unfortunately.
I am feeling better about McCain as the candidate and have volunteered my support. It was really sweet last night....you could tell he really appreciated the support and was just so, I don't know...proud of his country and the opportunities he has had. You could tell it in his eyes. I wish I knew the media's comments. There were A LOT of young people there and that was excluding OSU's College Republicans, so hopefully he gets a lot of young supporters in the general election. February 11 College Life/PoliticsHere at Ohio State, we have what is called The Oval. Basically, it is this huge lawn area sort of in the center of campus with concrete paths to branch off on when walking to class. The Oval is an interesting place to be, especially during spring. It literally turns into a beach that is missing an ocean. Girls lay out on their beach towels in skimpy bikinis while guys play frisbee wearing their swim attire as well. Quite comical if you ask me considering we are in the middle of Ohio and it really is lucky to get up to 70 before school lets out. But it also attracts the fanatics...people for gay rights, the environment, large gatherings debating religion, etc. Ah yes, it is always a fun day when one is told they are going to hell. With this being election year, it is going to be interesting. Already there are people out and about in below zero degree weather with the windchill! Seriously, I don't care if Abraham Lincoln was to rise from the dead...I'm not standing out there for anyone. Anyhow, sidewalk chalk is a favorite method to get a message across. As I was walking across the Oval this morning, "Hillary 2008" was written all over the concrete. But someone decided to stand up against her OSU campaign to write as one was going south "IF...SHE...IS...HERE...WHO'S...RUNNING...HELL?" Then again, springtime on the Oval this year might be interesting. February 07 All I can say is...if McCain chooses Huckabee, he better not die.
This is not an attack on McCain in any way, shape, or form, I'm just giving my (very) blunt opinion... Kind of sad about Romney, but I loved the speech he gave at CPAC and his slight effort at trying to get the party behind our next candidate... February 06 Election 2008I just don't know what I think about this.
I have always thought that when I would vote, I would vote for a candidate, not against. I know that I will never cast a vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or probably any Democratic candidate in the near future. I was a Romney supporter and then I was a Ron Paul supporter (and probably still am, but that doesn't matter in this election) then I thought I could cast my vote for McCain. Now I am almost back to Romney once again and I don't know why. It's just that when the results came in last night, I was a little sad. And I don't understand that, either.
Perhaps it is because I continually recieved e-mails updating me on the campaign and would check his website out every once in awhile which I never did that regularly for any candidate. But then again, I did read both of McCain's books so usually autobiographies are biased enough to get one to like the author. Maybe that is why I don't mind McCain as much as other Republicans do. Do I like all of Romney's positions? No. Do I like all of McCain's positions? No. Does anyone fully like all of any politicians positions? I hope not. One candidate says he is a conservative, the other is definitely a moderate. Should one stick with what they know or take a gamble? So what if Romney gets into office and is more liberal than we think? He probably isn't any more moderate than McCain. So now we are down to experience. War hero and long-term senator or businessman, governor, reformer of the Olympics? You know what? I probably wouldn't mind if it was a McCain-Romney ticket. NOW, I know that would only happen when hell freezes over, but think about it. Who cares if the VP is a flip-flopper? I think McCain would be tough on terrorism, but I think Romney could bring some interesting economic ideas to the table. And then McCain could put him in line with any wierd stuff. I'm not sure what is underneath this animosity between them. Politicians are politicians. (Extra Note: I will be upset, however, if Huckabee gets anywhere near the VP spot). I guess I will just have the couple of months after the convention to get used to the idea of voting for whichever candidate it may be. But that still doesn't help me decided on who to cast my vote for in one month. January 21 Creepy Political Dreams and Who to Support? When I last wrote, I was only leaning toward Paul, Romney, and McCain.
I still am. If Ohio's primaries were held today, I would vote for Ron Paul but only because I am in a I-want-to-take-a-stand-and-be-opinionated attitude today. Really, I don't know. I think Paul would stick to what he says the most (as far as a politician can), McCain would be great for all sorts of reasons, and I think Romney would still be okay so I haven't quite given hope on him yet. Moving on, I occasionally have really wierd political dreams (all of which I can pinpoint to how my brain has come up with them based on my various thoughts and information processed through my brain on that day). So I thought I would share one or two today....I swear I do not drink (never had even one sip in my life) or do drugs, nor do I eat within three hours before I go to bed. They are just very random. 1.) From a couple of months ago: Iran has decided to do a dual attack on the United States and Israel. Their plan is to just send as many civilians as possible by boat to take over the land. There are frantic news reports that come out just a couple of hours before the arrival and all of America is stunned. I leave my house and discover all of these Iranians all over the place trimming our bushes and trees in my yard. My brother, who is two, is hiding in a bush and I quickly scoop him up before the Iranian President Ahmadenijad (sp?)-chops his head off with the hedge clippers. We go back inside and there are Iranians cleaning the house. By the way, these Iranians do not pay much attention at all to any of us as if we aren't there. What does my family and two random people with us claiming to be my grandparents decide to do? We take all of our living room furniture and miraculously get it through the tiny opening to our attic. It reminds me now of how Anne Frank's family hid. In order to distract the Iranians, I drop a basket of mixed nuts on the floor and they scramble to pick them up. I do this repeatedly. Then I wake up. 2.) From last night: The dream starts out that I am reading the Drudge Report and there is an article that Hillary's campaign has ended? Why? Because it is being reported that Bill Clinton has fathered several children in a long lasting affair with his brother's wife, named Isabel. For many, many years he has hid these children on a obscure island. He has visited them frequently and gives them candy. Maybe I should stop watching so much news....I don't know... January 08 I (Don't) Like MikeI have been trying to keep up with the campaigning as of late. I would say that is going really well and I am getting more excited about voting in a presidential election for the first time. Gradually, I have begun to check of certain candidates that I hope do not get the nomination. Ohio seems to have rather late primaries (early March), so it seems Ohio is only important for it's electoral votes in the actual election. I really am bummed that I don't live in Iowa or New Hampshire. I have decided that Mike Huckabee is not a good choice since writing my last post. In fact, his recent popularity has me a bit concerned. He does not come across to me like he would do what he says (not that I would want him to anway). And it seems like many are just siding with him for his religion. No, you don't do that. That is just as bad as siding with Hillary Clinton because she is a woman. Deep down, I really think he has a problem with other people's religion as well. A lot of people are commenting on how he is likeable and whatnot, sort of like President Bush, but he isn't coming across that way to me. I think that is where my biggest problem lies. Who am I leaning toward now? Paul, McCain, and Romney.
